Paradisus Punta Cana, a luxury all-inclusive resort located in the Dominican Republic, hoisted the prestigious Blue Flag recently for the first time at a special ceremony on property.
This distinct accolade comes as a result of the resort’s ongoing efforts in creating an eco-friendly environment. The Blue Flag program is an international voluntary certification process for beaches and marinas.
“We are honored to obtain the Blue Flag eco-label as a result of our extensive sustainability initiatives over the past year,” said Conrad Bergwerf, general manager of Paradisus Resorts Punta Cana, in a written release.
With Blue Flag qualifications reviewed each year, the resort team has put forth great effort to acquire the eco-label, furthering the resort brand’s commitment to sustainability.
After a year of evaluation, a jury awarded Paradisus Punta Cana with the Blue Flag within the organization’s ‘beach sector’ category. In attendance at the hoisting ceremony was the general manager of Paradisus Punta Cana, vice minister of tourism, president of the of East Coast Hotels Association, president of the environmental law institute and Management and Operations Committee members from Paradisus Resorts in the Dominican Republic, along with members of the media and resort friends and family.
In order to receive the Blue Flag there must be proper usage of the beaches and marinas, environmentally-friendly facilities, management of organic materials, access for people with disabilities, swimming areas marked with buoy signals, properly installed bathrooms that do not interfere with or pollute the beach, among other qualifications.
Additionally, the resort must establish a recycling program and form a specific committee to ensure all environmental efforts are implemented and sustained.
Sister property Paradisus Palma Real in Punta Cana also hoisted the Blue Flag for the third consecutive year, continuing to support the brand’s mission to protect its surrounding environment.
