American Airlines has announced that it will be introducing Premium Economy (a step up from flying coach) to its international widebody fleet by late 2016. Offering a tier of service directly behind Business Class, Premium Economy will net customers priority check-in and boarding, as well as a checked baggage allowance. Once on the plane, amenities include roomier seats, personal on-demand entertainment, noise reducing headphones, amenity kits, upgraded meals, and spirits, beer and wine.
American's new Boeing 787-9, which is expected to enter service in late 2016, will be the first to offer Premium Economy seating. The 787-9 will have Premium Economy seating in a 2-3-2 configuration, as well as Business Class, Main Cabin Extra (which has six inches of additional legroom) and Main Cabin seats. Premium Economy will also be available on the Airbus A350, which will arrive in 2017.
American said it also plans to add Premium Economy seating to all Boeing 777-300ERs, 777-200ERs, 787-8s and Airbus A330s over the next three years. Boeing 767-300s will not get Premium Economy class, as those aircraft are slated for retirement over the coming years.
