Six Senses prepares to open first European resort in Douro Valley

Six Senses Hotels, Resorts & Spas will open its first resort in Europe tomorrow, located in the beautiful Portuguese UNESCO World Heritage area of the Douro Valley.

Covering 22 acres, the new resort will feature an expansive 24,000 square foot Six Senses Spa offering treatments inspired by the local area and its famed port wine.

Facilities include ten treatment rooms and a Vitality Suite located in the heart of the spa.

The suite features a sauna, steam bath with chromo therapy, a laconium, experience showers and a herbal bath using locally grown lavender, rosemary and chamomile to calm the body and mind.

Five of the spa’s treatment rooms offer incredible views of the surrounding vineyards and valley allowing spa treatments to seamlessly bring together the guest experience and the breath-taking surrounds.

The reception area is open plan, surrounded by shelves and hanging spaces allowing guests to relax and shop ahead of their treatment.

The spa also includes an indoor swimming pool making it an ideal space for guests to enjoy before or after a treatment.

Signature treatments have been inspired by the region and use locally sourced produce.

Guests can experience the incredible beauty of the five hectares of surrounding forest with Forest Bathing.

The Japanese term is used to describe a gentle and quiet walk in the woods with all the senses open to every sound, smell, colour and feel of the forest.

Forest Bathing is considered to have a therapeutic effect on the body and mind, with studies indicating that it can lower blood pressure and heart rate, alleviate stress and provide a great boost for the immune system.

The resorts 57 guest rooms and suites are created with eco-friendly materials blending nature, Portuguese tradition and the elements of water, nature, space, stone and wood. Located in the heart of the resort, The Wine Library features a menu of tapas, cheese, smoked hams and local sausages paired with a wide selection of wine from the region.

Other features include an outdoor swimming pool with panoramic views of the Douro Valley, an activities hut and gym housing the latest exercise equipment as well as on-site personal trainers and aerial yoga.
