The new ships will draw on the brand’s experience with its Solstice and Milennium class vessels, such as the Celebrity Millennium (pictured here).

Celebrity Cruises has signed a letter of intent with French shipbuilder STX France for two ships in a new class of vessels, to be developed under the name Project EDGE.

The new Project EDGE ships, which the line says will build upon its experience with the brand’s Millennium and Solstice class vessels, will hold 2,900 guests and be 984 feet long, 123 feet wide and 190 feet high.

“The addition of two project EDGE vessels to our fleet delivers on our long-term strategic plan of moderate capacity growth,” said Richard D. Fain, chairman and chief executive officer of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., which owns Celebrity.

The company expects delivery of the first ship in fall 2018, with the second vessel delivered in the early part of 2020. The order is contingent upon the completion of customary conditions, including financing.

The ships will also be designed with sustainability in mind, benefiting from new technologies to drive significant fuel efficiency and an ongoing process to ensure the extensive use of sustainable materials.
