Provisional numbers show that visitor arrivals to Fiji for January reached a record 57,747, an increase of 15 percent compared to a year earlier, according to statistics recently released by Tourism Fiji.
There were increases in the number of visitors from the following countries; Australia (3,492 or 13.6 percent to 29,137); New Zealand (1,302 or 19.4 percent to 7,997); China (1,297 or 54.4 percent to 3,680); the United States (673 or 17.5 percent to 4,520); the Pacific Islands (696 or 18 percent to 4,561); Japan (265 or 65.9 percent to 667); South Korea (89 or 15.9 percent to 650]; Canada (27 or 3.2 percent to 874) and “other parts of Asia” (19 or 1.6 percent to 1,235).
However, decreases were recorded in the number of visitors from “other countries” (down 228 or 35.8 percent to 409); the United Kingdom (down 56 or 4.2 percent to 1,284) and Continental Europe (down 54 or 1.9 percent to 2,733).
Visitors arriving for holiday purposes accounted for 77.1 percent of total arrivals, 6.8 percent came to visit their friends or relatives, 3.2 percent came for business purposes, while 12.9 percent visited Fiji for other reasons.
