Tropical Storm Patricia was downgraded from a hurricane Saturday morning 13 hours after becoming the strongest hurricane to ever make landfall on Mexico‘s Pacific Coast, the Weather Channel reports.
The storm had become a category 5 hurricane early Friday, the strongest tropical cyclone ever measured in the Western Hemisphere, with maximum sustained winds of up to 200 mph.
The eye of the hurricane made landfall Friday near Cuixmala in the state of Jalisco, with maximum sustained winds at an estimated 165 mph, making it still a category 5 storm. The Weather Channel said it expects the storm to continue to wind down as it moves over Mexico's mountainous interior, although its remnants could pose a flood threat in Texas.
