The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, is paying it forward by launching a “50 Acts of Aloha” campaign.

From donating 50 sleeves of balls to random golfers to creating the new My Mauna Kea forest stewardship program, hotel employees and their ohana are organizing thoughtful acts of kindness — nearly one every week — throughout 2015.

The hotel has already completed a number of Acts of Aloha including donations of 50 golf bags to the Big Island Junior Golf Association and 50 Target gift cards to three charitable non-profits in Minneapolis. More acts are planned nationwide, although the majority will benefit the Hawaii Island community and environment, including the new My Mauna Kea collaborative forest stewardship program.

The hotel, in partnership with Mauna Kea Forest Restoration Project and Hawaii Forest and Trail, has also launched an environmental and cultural stewardship program.

Employees, visitors and guests are encouraged to participate in numerous ways, including signing up for a bird watching excursion, which will include volunteer time to plant mamane trees, or collect tree seeds in an effort to restore the habitat and food source of the critically endangered Palila bird, only found on the southwest slopes of Mauna Kea.

My Mauna Kea volunteer trips are $147 per person, including tax, and include round-trip transfer, access fees to the site, deli-boxed lunch, guide and all necessary equipment. Upcoming excursions are scheduled for March 16 and April 6.

Guests are encouraged to follow the 50 Acts of Aloha campaign and get involved using #50ActsofAloha. More information about the campaign and the My Mauna Kea stewardship program can be found by visiting www.timelessmaunakea.com.
