The State of Guerrero has announced the appointment of Sergio Salmerón as its new tourism secretary.
Salmerón will oversee Guerrero’s promotional efforts as well as marketing, public relations and special events across the state, mainly in Acapulco, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo and Taxco. His principal objective will be to prepare the port of Acapulco to host Tianguis, Mexico’s largest tourism fair, slated for March 2015.
Salmerón’s experience in travel and tourism includes founding Guerrero’s College of Tourism (COLTUR) and serving as vice president for the Hotel and Tourism Enterprises Association of Acapulco (AHETA). He has 43 years of experience in the hotel industry, having held positions at properties such as the Fairmont Acapulco Princess, Club de Pesca and La Palapa. Salmerón is currently the director of hotel Playa Suites in Acapulco and a hospitality and finance consultant.
Salmerón graduated from the Universidad Autónoma de Guerrero (UAG), and has a masters in finance and a doctorate in administration from the Universidad Americana de Acapulco. He also completed a specialization in hospitality from Cornell University, New York. In the past, he served as chairman of the board for several tourism and public transportation companies.
