Situated off the L.A. coast, Catalina has long been a favorite escape, so it’s no surprise to see a destination spa open on the island. Island Spa Catalina is part of a $40 million revitalization plan for Catalina Island.
Once popular hideout for old Hollywood’s elite (e.g. Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe), the island now offers an escape from L.A.’s traffic-heavy streets. Visitors who take the 15-minute ferry ride from the mainland can explore the island’s natural features via camping, zip lining, and diving, as well as shopping and a variety of festivals throughout the year.
The brand new spa itself is located in the Avalon resort community, inside a historic building. The 15,000-square-foot space has nine treatment rooms, all of which feature ocean views. There’s also a “vista deck” and spa courtyard, as well as a eucalyptus steam room.
The treatments reflect the spa’s seaside spot, such as a “sea oxygen” facial or a detoxifying body wrap with seaweed. Prices range from $50 to $200.
