This month, while we all give thanks for our full plates and second-helpings, the philanthropic granola bar, This Bar Saves Lives, is partnering with Ojai Valley Inn & Spa in Southern California to bring the campaign against world hunger to the next level. The resort’s interactive “Giving Wall” allows guests the chance to trade grateful, hand-written notes for an all-natural, gourmet snack bar. In exchange? This Bar Saves Lives donates a life-saving nutrition pack to a child in need.
This Bar Saves Lives was created by activists (and actors) Ryan Devlin, Todd Grinnell, and Ravi Patel, with support from Kristen Bell, who sought a way to help malnourished children in countries such as Liberia.
Hotels nationwide, including Mondrian and Ace, are joining Ojai and jumping onboard with the project, stocking their mini fridges and gift shops with the flavorful, good-for-you (and your karma) bars.
“[We’ve been working with] like-minded people and like-minded companies whose hearts and minds are in the same place as ours,” said Ravi Patel of the hospitality partnerships.
Some restaurants, like the rooftop State and Lake at Chicago's theWit Hotel, are even deconstructing the snacks (wild blueberries; dark chocolate; roasted almonds) and transforming them into gourmet desserts. Each dish sold results in another nutrition packet donation.
The next time you’re tempted by the in-room mini bar, opt for the meal with a mission. And for Thanksgiving dessert, consider getting crafty with a box or two of This Bar Saves Lives from your local health food grocer.
